Supported Accommodation Services

Families and young people often face many barriers to achieving safe, secure and affordable accommodation.  Our Supported Accommodation Service works with families and young people to enable them to successfully obtain long term housing and achieve their personal goals.

Kyabra provides medium term accommodation for families and young people who are homeless or facing housing difficulties.  A Resource Worker engages with those we house to assist them in working towards their picture of the future.  Our Resource Workers can offer:

  • Assistance to set and work towards goals and plan for the future
  • Assistance in overcoming barriers to sustainable long term housing
  • Support
  • Advocacy
  • Assistance with gaining and maintaining Centrelink benefits
  • Assistance with applications to the Department of Housing
  • Appropriate referral to other agencies and services
  • An opportunity to meet and work with other tenants
  • Access to learning opportunities

Our accommodation gives families a stable, safe place to live and an opportunity to work on issues which may be affecting them.

Rent is charged on the basis of income and tenants pay their own electricity, gas and telephone charges.  Our houses are not furnished, however Resource Workers may be able to link people with other agencies that can help them acquire the furniture and household  goods needed.  Pets are not permitted and will disqualify applicants from any allocation process.

When  vacancies occur, applications are taken over the telephone and all applications are considered on a needs basis.

Sustainable Tenancies Opportunities Project  (STOP) and Homelessness Early Intervention Service (HEIS)

These two projects work together to assist residents of Inala, Acacia Ridge and surrounding areas to sustain their tenancies.  The projects, funded respectively by Community Renewal and The Department of Communities, are being piloted through to January 2010, and aim to research, develop and implement best practice in early intervention to sustain tenancies.
